Join us for a one-of-a-kind community event that transforms the streets into a vibrant space for connection, activity, and wellness. Open Streets ICT – WSU & Shocker Neighborhood returns on Sunday, April 19, from 12 to 4 PM, bringing nearly two miles of 17th Street (from Oliver to Volutsia) to life with fun, fitness, and excitement. We will be tabling outdoors from 11:30-4:30 to provide voter registration & education at the event.
At this program meeting, we’re bringing in The Voter Network to help us see the bigger picture. They’ll walk us through real data from past elections. We will see where voters are engaged, where they have dropped off, and what that means for our work here in Wichita.
We’ll also get a look at how coordinated state-wide outreach is evolving. We will explore together what piece of the plan LWV of Wichita can fulfill.
Most importantly, we’ll introduce new tools designed to make voter outreach simpler and more doable, whether you have an hour or a few afternoons to give.
Bring your questions, your friends and your calendar, and see how you can help increase voter engagement in Kansas.

Join us for a panel discussion on how Wichita is addressing extreme heat through initiatives that preserve the tree canopy, improve energy efficiency, and keep residents cool.
Extreme heat kills more people in the U.S. than any other natural hazard.
According to a 2022 NASA Heat Study of Wichita, Wichita is facing a host of climate threats, one being extreme heat that is manifested through the urban heat island (UHI) effect, a phenomenon where urban areas experience significantly higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to human-made surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and buildings that absorb and retain more heat than natural landscapes such as grass, soil, and trees.
In this panel discussion, individuals involved in preserving Wichita‘s environmental sustainability efforts will discuss the different ways the Wichita community is addressing threats caused by extreme heat, such as the Wichita Tree Canopy Policy, tree planting projects, energy efficiency programs, cooling centers for individuals at risk during extreme heat, and what individuals can do to keep Wichita cool all year long.
