Join our hands-on Voter-to-Voter Training wth Maryam Abid, and help turn conversations into votes. The Voter-to-Voter program launched in 2018 on a simple belief: democracy works better when we all participate. Instead of postcards or calls to strangers, this program equips League volunteers to talk with the people they already know — friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors — about voting. And it works. Across Kansas, volunteers have already reached more than 30,000 voters, and the people they connect with turn out at rates 25% higher than the statewide average. This training will give you simple, practical tools to have confident, respectful conversations that encourage participation — no scripts, no pressure, just real relationships. If you’ve ever wondered, “What can I personally do to increase turnout?” — this is it. Come to our monthly open program for Voter-to-Voter training. Bring your laptop, and we will set you up before you leave. Bring a friend or two and be part of the effort to strengthen democracy, one conversation at a time. Light snacks served. **If you are unable to attend, please request a Zoom link from tech@lwvwichita.org.

Gloria Farha Flentje Focht will present a talk about SCR 1611, a measure that will be on the ballot in August 2026 to change the selection of Kansas Supreme Court Judges to a direct election. In Kansas, judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals are appointed through a merit selection process. These appointments are made by the Supreme Court Nominating Commission (SCNC), composed of 9 members. This nonpartisan nominating commission is composed of lawyers and nonlawyers from across the state, and the nominating process includes a rigorous investigation of a judge‘s background, education, professional experience, and more. SCR 1611 will be put on the ballot in August 2026 for a vote of the people. If passed with a simple majority, elections for the Kansas Supreme Court would begin in 2028, and Kansas would join 22 other states that use direct elections for their state supreme courts. While several states use a nominating commission, only Kansas has a commission controlled by the state bar. The amendment would mean that justices would be elected by popular vote for six-year terms through staggered elections beginning in 2028. Kansas is the only state in the Union in which members of the state supreme court are nominated not by the governor but by a nominating commission controlled by the Kansas Bar Association (KBA). About the speaker: Gloria Farha Flentje Focht is the immediate past chair of the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Committee, a past president of the Wichita Bar Association, and a longtime community leader for the Wichita area. ?? Tuesday, February 24, 2026 ? 6–7 p.m. ?? Wichita Public Library – Advanced Learning Library 711 W. 2nd St. N, Wichita, KS Tuesday Topics is a program sponsored in collaboration with The League of Women Voters of Wichita Metro.
