Wichita-Metro League just seems to get busier and busier!  Our membership is now more than 130 strong. Monthly membership meetings have included programs on Foster Care and Privatization, Paul Johnson’s Legislative Update, Wichita Water, and the E.R.A., as well as 3 summer Happy Hour Socials. Tuesday Topics, co-sponsored by the Wichita Public Library, presented lunchtime programs on School Vouchers, Voter Registration, Green Spaces vs Development, Election Analysis, VA Services: Privatization of Veteran Medical Care, Bridging the Racial Divide, and the Future of Century II.

The LWV Wichita Committee on Celebrating the Centennial of the 19th Amendment is actively planning for the Riverfest Sundown Parade on May 31, the Centennial Inaugural Event luncheon on August 24, and more events throughout 2020. This group is currently meeting every two weeks and includes many active volunteers.

Voter Services has registered more than 1,000 new voters and talked to a thousand more about voting. We received two grants from LWVUS for Registering Voters in High Schools and at Naturalization Ceremonies. We partner or participate with many other diverse groups, including showing Iron Jawed Angels at WSU on Women’s Equality Day and co-sponsoring Wichita Women’s March 2019. We’ve educated and registered voters at Open Streets ICT,  the community LevelUp Event, Moms Demand Action events, La Familia Meet the Candidates, Sister of St Joseph Dear Neighbors, Sunflower Community Action and more. We participated with Wichita Arts Council, Kansas Health Coalition and Wichita Women Attorneys in candidate forums.

To raise funds in 2018, Leaguers created a calendar planner Celebrating Women, Kansas & Voting highlighting outstanding diverse Kansas women, past and present, and hosted a program at WSU featuring the above living honorees. League members also supported African Americans Renewing Interest in Spirituals Ensemble’s (ARISE) programs.

On the Advocacy side, we keep voters informed with email, legislative reports, and Facebook – League of Women Voters Wichita Metro has 959 followers!  We have encouraged voters to contact their elected officials about Medicaid Expansion, Transparency in Government, the Government Shutdown, and many bills on Voting Rights and Election Integrity.
